Living a healthy life isn't just about eating right and working out - it's also about balancing your body's pH! Now, if you're scratching your head wondering, "What's pH?", don't worry, I'll try to break it down for you! I know this... because I do make artisan soaps!

Anyway, simply put, pH is a fancy term that stands for "potential of hydrogen". It's all about how many hydrogen atoms are in a solution. Now, why do we care about this? Because it tells us whether something is acidic (like lemon juice), basic (or alkaline, like soap), or neutral (like water). And this scale goes from 0 to 14. 

The magic number in the middle - 7 - that's neutral. If it's above 7, it's alkaline or basic, and if it's below 7, it's acidic.

You might guess that super acidic stuff isn't too good for us - after all, battery acid is highly acidic, and that's definitely not good! How do I know this? Come on, I'm a 90s kid! I licked batteries for fun! LOL! Anyways, did you know that super basic things can be harmful, too? For example, the liquid you use to unclog drains is very alkaline, and you wouldn't want that on your skin, let alone in your body. So, safe to say, we want to stay near the neutral zone.

Our blood naturally likes to be slightly alkaline, hanging around the pH level of 7.35 to 7.45. No matter what we eat or drink, our bodies work hard to keep our blood pH in this range. However, the rest of our body's pH can swing a little bit more based on our lifestyle choices, like what we eat, how stressed we are, or how much we move around.

Keeping a healthy pH balance in our bodies is all about our daily choices. Here are some easy steps to get you started:

  • Eat a well-rounded diet: Fresh fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean meats, and healthy fats are great for maintaining a good pH balance.

Hey, foodies! Let's talk about something personal real quick – my relationship with rice. 

Ever had a friendship that you thought was perfect until you discovered it was the cause of your unease and discomfort? Well, that's precisely how I felt about my lifelong partner, rice.


You see, I've always been a certified rice lover. I mean, who could resist the charm of steaming hot rice on the side of adobo or liempo? But over the recent years, I noticed an unwelcome pattern... every rice-filled meal left me bloated and uncomfortable, accompanied by skin breakouts. You could say, I was at a "grainy" crossroads.

Then it hit me, could it be the rice? A short stint with an elimination diet confirmed my suspicions. The culprit was right there on my plate, nestled next to my favorite ulam or sud-an (viand). The transformation after removing rice from my diet was surprising because I had less bloating, clearer skin, and a general sense of lightness. I was in denial for years! This happens in a vicious cycle. I'd eat rice, then I get breakouts and bloat like a beached whale. I'd quit rice, and I'd feel better.

1. Tofu (Tokwa) - High in protein and versatile in cooking, this can be a delightful rice substitute, adding a unique texture and nutrition boost to your meal

2. Sweet Potatoes or Kamote: Who can forget the humble kamote? A root crop that's both affordable and healthy.

3. Adlai or Job's Tears: Adlai is a local grain that tastes similar to rice but has a lower glycemic index. It's slightly more expensive but can be an excellent occasional treat for your body.

4. Corn: A versatile and commonly available alternative. You can have it boiled, grilled, or turn it into corn rice!

5. Shirataki Rice: With its low calorie and high fiber content, it presents a guilt-free, keto-friendly alternative that fits seamlessly into a Filipino diet.

6. Quinoa: Rich in protein and fiber, quinoa is an excellent rice substitute. It might not be as commonly found in our local markets, but it's worth the effort and goes well with many Filipino dishes.

BONUS: My favorite - Jackfruit: Not the sweet/ripe one. Think of it more like a pork alternative if you will, but hey, it's a satisfyingly hearty addition to your meal, trust me on this! I love it so much as Ginataang Langka or sometimes just plain Kinilaw.

Now, we've talked before about the benefits of carb cycling about eating more carbs on active days and less on rest days, remember? (Catch up HERE, if you haven't read it) With these alternatives, carb cycling can easily be a part of your daily routine, even on a budget. It's about being clever and flexible with your choices!

Here's a challenge: Next time you're cooking tinola or sinigang, why not try it with a side of quinoa or a steaming bowl of corn rice? Or how about grilling sweet potatoes with your inihaw na bangus?

Hello, beautiful mamas!

I see you there, cradling your new baby, lost in the profound love and awe that only motherhood can bring. You're absolutely glowing. But let me guess, you've also found yourself looking in the mirror, feeling a bit of disconnect between the woman you see and the woman you remember, right? Trust me, I've been there.


It took years and years for me to battle this crazy weight issue. What with all the hormones that are going haywire!? I never imagined I'd worry about my weight considering that was just 99 lbs when I got married!

But becoming a mother really is an extraordinary journey, filled with highs and lows, and the changes it brings to our bodies can be tough to navigate. After NoodleLito was born, I remember the feelings of exhaustion, frustration, and sometimes, a little sadness. I looked at my post-baby body and thought, "Will I ever get my old self back?"

Here's the thing, my beautiful mama friends. Giving birth is a miracle, and with it comes a whirlwind of physical, emotional, and mental transformations. It's okay to feel overwhelmed. It's okay to feel like it's hard. Because it is.

New moms often grapple with sleep deprivation, anxiety, hormonal changes, and the constant demand of caring for a newborn. All these can take a toll on our mental health, affecting how we feel about ourselves and our bodies. And let's face it, societal pressure to "bounce back" doesn't make it any easier.

But remember, our bodies have done something amazing – we've brought life into this world! It's okay to take time to heal, recover, and adjust to this new phase of life. And when it comes to shedding that postpartum weight, I want you to know: it's not about bouncing back, it's about moving forward to a healthier, stronger you.

I wish I heard of the Yoli Better Body System sooner because this approach to health and wellness is not about a quick fix or unrealistic diets. That would have saved me from years and years of trial and error! I did all sorts of fiets you can imagine. From South Beath Diet to Juicing to Intermittent Fasting! I now realize it's about nurturing our bodies with what they need to heal and strengthen post-pregnancy. It's about balance. I used to drink Balance Complete from Young Living and that worked for me, but I can't afford it anymore due to the International shipping rates.


I have yet to gather my photos to compare the weight changes over the past 10 years (2013 to 2023) so please check back when I update this blog post!

Had I known about the BBS or carb cycling, then that would have saved me a decade's worth of yo-yo dieting. My fellow mommy bloggers and I have found that this program is flexible and straightforward especially for new moms. You’ve seen the alluring headlines before, e.g., "Lose 10 pounds in 10 days," "Fit into your high school jeans by the weekend," and other such tempting promises of rapid weight loss. These "miracle diets" are often presented as the ultimate solution to shedding unwanted pounds. But if diets were the magic bullet they claim to be, wouldn't we all be strutting around in our ideal bodies by now? 


The reality is that most diets often fail in the long term. So, let's talk about the importance of lifestyle changes and improved eating habits as the cornerstones of sustainable weight loss, increased energy, and overall health. Mind you, I am on a Yoli Transformation Challenge as of this writing, happily doing carb cycling and seeing remarkable results!


The Dieting Paradox

Diets often offer quick fixes, targeting rapid weight loss through severe calorie restriction or elimination of certain food groups. Yet, studies have shown that nearly 65% of dieters regain the weight lost within three years. This cycle, often referred to as "yo-yo dieting," can lead to various health complications like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and mental health disorders.

Scientific research has shown that our bodies perceive dieting as a threat, triggering survival mechanisms that cause us to conserve energy and slow metabolism. This makes long-term weight loss incredibly difficult to maintain. In essence, dieting could be setting us up for failure from the start. And that's why I am NOT DIETING and instead re-thinking my meal plan and tracking my health journey to make sure I'm not missing anything.


The Power of Lifestyle Changes

Rather than focusing on the restrictive, often punishing nature of diets, we should instead shift our attention towards sustainable lifestyle changes. Elements such as regular physical activity, stress management, and sufficient sleep play significant roles in our weight and overall health.

Regular exercise doesn't just burn calories, it can also improve mood and energy levels, making you more likely to make healthier food choices. Similarly, stress management is crucial, as chronic stress can lead to overeating or unhealthy food choices. Lastly, getting adequate sleep is key, as sleep deprivation can disrupt hormones that regulate hunger and appetite.


Eating Right, Not Less

While the word "diet" often implies restriction, what if we focused on what to include rather than what to exclude? Eating a variety of foods from all food groups can provide a wide range of nutrients our bodies need. Mindful eating, which involves paying attention to hunger and fullness cues, can also prevent overeating.

Portion control is another aspect of healthy eating. My family eats up to 80% full. When we heard this is how the people of Okinawa get to live longer, we thought it just made sense and that we shouldn't be gluttonous or whatever. By serving smaller portions, we can still enjoy our favorite foods without overindulgence. On the other hand, overly restrictive diets can lead to nutritional deficiencies and disordered eating patterns, doing more harm than good. I'm very happy I get to eat the food I want, but I just need to plan when to eat them! 


Practical Tips for Success

So, how can you turn these insights into action? Here are some practical tips:

  • Start with small changes: A complete lifestyle overhaul can be overwhelming. Starting with small changes like taking the stairs instead of the elevator or adding an extra serving of vegetables to your meals can be more manageable.
  • Stay physically active: Find an activity you enjoy, so it doesn't feel like a chore. Whether it's dancing, biking, or hiking, the goal is to move more. I personally just prefer to walk. Either I go around the city with le husband or hop on our super reliable R2 walking pad/treadmill for an hour or two.
  • Mindful eating: Take time to eat without distractions, savoring each bite. This can help you eat less and enjoy your food more. Learn about carb cycling, which I blogged previously. READ HERE if you didn't see that yet!
  • Rest well: Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night to regulate your appetite and energy levels. Some sleeping info for you here (and for vampires, errr night owls, read here).
  • Seek support: Don't hesitate to ask for help. Whether it's from a registered dietitian, a mental health professional, or a support group, you don't have to do this alone.
