Today, I want to share with you my personal journey and the reason why I've shifted my focus from makeup and skincare to health and wellness.

Health and wellness are the foundation of true beauty. When we take care of our bodies from the inside out, it reflects on our skin, our hair, our eyes – every part of us. 

We radiate energy, positivity, and a natural glow that no amount of makeup can replicate. Plus, prioritizing our health ensures that we age gracefully, maintaining our vitality and zest for life as we grow older.

There is an old saying that goes, "You are what you eat." And I've found this to be true. The changes I saw in myself when I started eating healthier were astonishing. 

My skin cleared up, my hair grew healthier, and I felt more energetic and alive than ever before.


My Evolution

I remember when I first started my blog, Basta Igat, Sikat by MyMaria, it was personal. I talked about my mid-life crisis, what it was like being independent living in a different city in an apartment, my drinking sessions, and travels and adventures with friends. And then I got married and it was about starting a family. 

Then it was all about the latest makeup trends and skincare products. But as I began to learn more about health and wellness, I realized that these were just quick fixes. They could enhance my appearance, but they couldn't make me truly healthy.

And so, I made the decision to change. That was before the pandemic. Then COVID hit and I lost track because of all the restrictions. Eventually, I started incorporating healthier habits back into my life - regular exercise, a balanced diet, and more positivity. It wasn't easy, but it was worth it. It felt like forever to see changes but then I felt better, looked better, and most importantly, I was happier.

Living a healthy life isn't just about eating right and working out - it's also about balancing your body's pH! Now, if you're scratching your head wondering, "What's pH?", don't worry, I'll try to break it down for you! I know this... because I do make artisan soaps!

Anyway, simply put, pH is a fancy term that stands for "potential of hydrogen". It's all about how many hydrogen atoms are in a solution. Now, why do we care about this? Because it tells us whether something is acidic (like lemon juice), basic (or alkaline, like soap), or neutral (like water). And this scale goes from 0 to 14. 

The magic number in the middle - 7 - that's neutral. If it's above 7, it's alkaline or basic, and if it's below 7, it's acidic.

You might guess that super acidic stuff isn't too good for us - after all, battery acid is highly acidic, and that's definitely not good! How do I know this? Come on, I'm a 90s kid! I licked batteries for fun! LOL! Anyways, did you know that super basic things can be harmful, too? For example, the liquid you use to unclog drains is very alkaline, and you wouldn't want that on your skin, let alone in your body. So, safe to say, we want to stay near the neutral zone.

Our blood naturally likes to be slightly alkaline, hanging around the pH level of 7.35 to 7.45. No matter what we eat or drink, our bodies work hard to keep our blood pH in this range. However, the rest of our body's pH can swing a little bit more based on our lifestyle choices, like what we eat, how stressed we are, or how much we move around.

Keeping a healthy pH balance in our bodies is all about our daily choices. Here are some easy steps to get you started:

  • Eat a well-rounded diet: Fresh fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean meats, and healthy fats are great for maintaining a good pH balance.

Hey, foodies! Let's talk about something personal real quick – my relationship with rice. 

Ever had a friendship that you thought was perfect until you discovered it was the cause of your unease and discomfort? Well, that's precisely how I felt about my lifelong partner, rice.


You see, I've always been a certified rice lover. I mean, who could resist the charm of steaming hot rice on the side of adobo or liempo? But over the recent years, I noticed an unwelcome pattern... every rice-filled meal left me bloated and uncomfortable, accompanied by skin breakouts. You could say, I was at a "grainy" crossroads.

Then it hit me, could it be the rice? A short stint with an elimination diet confirmed my suspicions. The culprit was right there on my plate, nestled next to my favorite ulam or sud-an (viand). The transformation after removing rice from my diet was surprising because I had less bloating, clearer skin, and a general sense of lightness. I was in denial for years! This happens in a vicious cycle. I'd eat rice, then I get breakouts and bloat like a beached whale. I'd quit rice, and I'd feel better.

But I know what you're thinking now... rice is a staple in the Filipino diet, and importantly, a crucial source of carbohydrates. And you're right! Carbohydrates, after all, are the body's main source of energy. However, it's vital to choose healthier sources. 

So, let's ask ourselves, what are some delicious, affordable, and Filipino-friendly alternatives to rice?

1. Tofu (Tokwa) - High in protein and versatile in cooking, this can be a delightful rice substitute, adding a unique texture and nutrition boost to your meal

2. Sweet Potatoes or Kamote: Who can forget the humble kamote? A root crop that's both affordable and healthy.

3. Adlai or Job's Tears: Adlai is a local grain that tastes similar to rice but has a lower glycemic index. It's slightly more expensive but can be an excellent occasional treat for your body.

4. Corn: A versatile and commonly available alternative. You can have it boiled, grilled, or turn it into corn rice!

5. Shirataki Rice: With its low calorie and high fiber content, it presents a guilt-free, keto-friendly alternative that fits seamlessly into a Filipino diet.

6. Quinoa: Rich in protein and fiber, quinoa is an excellent rice substitute. It might not be as commonly found in our local markets, but it's worth the effort and goes well with many Filipino dishes.

BONUS: My favorite - Jackfruit: Not the sweet/ripe one. Think of it more like a pork alternative if you will, but hey, it's a satisfyingly hearty addition to your meal, trust me on this! I love it so much as Ginataang Langka or sometimes just plain Kinilaw.

Now, we've talked before about the benefits of carb cycling about eating more carbs on active days and less on rest days, remember? (Catch up HERE, if you haven't read it) With these alternatives, carb cycling can easily be a part of your daily routine, even on a budget. It's about being clever and flexible with your choices!

Here's a challenge: Next time you're cooking tinola or sinigang, why not try it with a side of quinoa or a steaming bowl of corn rice? Or how about grilling sweet potatoes with your inihaw na bangus?

Hello, beautiful mamas!

I see you there, cradling your new baby, lost in the profound love and awe that only motherhood can bring. You're absolutely glowing. But let me guess, you've also found yourself looking in the mirror, feeling a bit of disconnect between the woman you see and the woman you remember, right? Trust me, I've been there.


It took years and years for me to battle this crazy weight issue. What with all the hormones that are going haywire!? I never imagined I'd worry about my weight considering that was just 99 lbs when I got married!

But becoming a mother really is an extraordinary journey, filled with highs and lows, and the changes it brings to our bodies can be tough to navigate. After NoodleLito was born, I remember the feelings of exhaustion, frustration, and sometimes, a little sadness. I looked at my post-baby body and thought, "Will I ever get my old self back?"

Here's the thing, my beautiful mama friends. Giving birth is a miracle, and with it comes a whirlwind of physical, emotional, and mental transformations. It's okay to feel overwhelmed. It's okay to feel like it's hard. Because it is.

New moms often grapple with sleep deprivation, anxiety, hormonal changes, and the constant demand of caring for a newborn. All these can take a toll on our mental health, affecting how we feel about ourselves and our bodies. And let's face it, societal pressure to "bounce back" doesn't make it any easier.

But remember, our bodies have done something amazing – we've brought life into this world! It's okay to take time to heal, recover, and adjust to this new phase of life. And when it comes to shedding that postpartum weight, I want you to know: it's not about bouncing back, it's about moving forward to a healthier, stronger you.

Ever wondered how you could turn your path to healthy living into an exciting game? The answer lies within the Yoli Better Body System (BBS). Imagine transforming your health journey into an adventure, with power-ups, tools, and exciting levels. Intrigued? Okay, read on! 


What is the Yoli Better Body System?

The Yoli Better Body System is a unique diet plan crafted to help you embrace a healthier lifestyle and potentially lose weight. This approach isn't your typical diet; it’s a fun-filled journey of health transformation, just like progressing through levels in a video game.


1. Power-Up with Yoli Shakes

Our first stop in this journey is power-ups. Instead of eating all your usual foods, some of them get swapped for Yoli's special shakes. In your video game, you might find a power-up potion or a super food that gives you more energy and makes your character stronger. Similarly, you know how in video games when your character is running low on energy, and you find an Energy potion that quickly boosts your character's stamina so you can keep playing? Yoli Passion is kind of like that, but in real life! Passion is a drink that gives you a quick energy boost and it comes in different flavors! Just like how an energy potion in a game refills your character's energy bar, Passion can help refill your own energy levels when you're feeling tired. Speaking of drinks, there are two more things. One that's packed with a lot of good stuff, like vitamins, called Truth, and one that's like a hydration power-up, which helps you enjoy drinking water more and helps your body stay strong and healthy, and it's called Fun.

Now, in many video games, there's an objective or mission that your character needs to complete. It could be to save a kingdom, defeat a boss, or find a hidden treasure. Your character might have special items or power-ups to help them succeed in their mission. Resolve is like a power-up that helps your body in this mission. It works with your body to support your metabolism, which is like your body's energy system. A healthy metabolism helps your body use the food you eat for energy efficiently. This can make the mission of maintaining a healthy weight a bit easier.


3. Follow the Yoli Diet Map

Every video game comes with a map, guiding you through quests and challenges. Similarly, the Yoli diet provides you with a map - a guide on when to eat, what to eat, and how much to eat. It encourages a balanced intake of fruits, veggies, and proteins to help your body stay strong and energetic.
